ICT Concepts Explained: FVGs, Order Blocks, and Liquidity Sweeps
If you have spent any time in the retail trading space recently, you have likely heard traders speaking what sounds like an entirely different language. They talk about "Fair Value Gaps," "Judas Swings," "Liquidity Sweeps," and "Order Blocks."
This terminology comes from ICT (Inner Circle Trader), a massively popular trading methodology created by Michael J. Huddleston.
The ICT methodology claims to teach traders how the "algorithms" that control the financial markets actually operate. It asserts that standard retail concepts—like support and resistance lines, RSI indicators, and trendlines—are actively used by institutional algorithms to trap and liquidate retail traders.
The problem with ICT is that the terminology is incredibly dense, almost cult-like, and heavily overcomplicated.
In this guide, we are going to strip away the confusing jargon. We will explain the core concepts of the ICT methodology using brutal, mathematical market mechanics, so you can actually use these concepts to pass a prop firm challenge.

1. The Core Philosophy: Liquidity is King
To understand ICT, you must accept one fundamental truth: The market does not move randomly; it moves to seek liquidity.
Large institutions (banks, hedge funds) cannot enter the market the way a retail trader does. If you buy 1 lot of EUR/USD, your order is filled instantly. If an institution needs to buy 10,000 lots of EUR/USD, they cannot just click "Buy." There isn't enough counter-party liquidity to fill that massive order at the current price. If they tried, they would experience catastrophic slippage.
To fill a massive Buy order, the institution needs massive Sell orders to match against.
Where do they find massive pools of sell orders? Retail Stop Losses.
The Stop Run (Liquidity Sweep)
Imagine price has established a very clear "Support Line" at 1.0500. Millions of retail traders see this support line. They buy at 1.0505, and they place their stop losses just below the support line at 1.0490.
A retail stop loss on a Long position is mathematically a Sell market order.
Therefore, resting just below that support line at 1.0490 is a massive pool of millions of Sell market orders. To the institution that needs to buy 10,000 lots, that pool of stop losses is an all-you-can-eat buffet of liquidity.
The institutional algorithm will intentionally drive the price down, break the support line, trigger all the retail stop losses (which injects massive Sell volume into the market), and the institution uses that sell volume to fill their massive Buy order. Once their order is filled, the price violently reverses upward.
This is an ICT Liquidity Sweep (also known as a Stop Run or a Judas Swing). If you are trading standard support and resistance, you are the liquidity.
2. Fair Value Gaps (FVG)
Once the institution has engineered a liquidity sweep and filled their massive order, the price will usually reverse violently. This violent reversal happens so fast that it creates an inefficiency in the market, known in ICT terminology as a Fair Value Gap (FVG).
How to Identify an FVG
An FVG is a three-candle pattern.
- Candle 1: The starting candle.
- Candle 2: A massive, violent displacement candle (e.g., a huge bullish candle).
- Candle 3: The closing candle.
An FVG exists if the high of Candle 1 does not overlap with the low of Candle 3.
Because the market moved so violently during Candle 2, buyers and sellers did not have a "fair" opportunity to transact at those price levels. The market left a gap of inefficiency.
How to Trade an FVG
Algorithms hate inefficiency. According to ICT theory, the price will almost always retrace back into the Fair Value Gap at a later time to "rebalance" the market before continuing in its original direction.
As a trader, you wait for the FVG to form, and you place your limit order inside the gap. When the price retraces to fill the gap, your order is triggered, and you ride the continuation.
3. Order Blocks (OB)
When an institution executes a massive liquidity sweep to stop out retail traders, they are injecting massive volume into the market. That footprint cannot be hidden.
An Order Block (OB) is the specific candlestick where the institution injected that massive volume before the violent reversal occurred.
- Bullish Order Block: The last down-close (bearish) candle before a massive bullish displacement that breaks market structure.
- Bearish Order Block: The last up-close (bullish) candle before a massive bearish displacement that breaks market structure.
How to Trade an Order Block
Retail traders look at the last bearish candle before a huge run-up and simply call it the "bottom." ICT traders look at that bearish candle and recognize it as the exact location where the algorithm executed its massive buy orders.
When the market eventually retraces back down to the top of that specific Order Block, you anticipate that the institution will defend that price level to protect their original position. You place your buy limit order at the top of the Order Block, with your stop loss tucked directly underneath it.
4. Optimal Trade Entry (OTE)
ICT relies heavily on Fibonacci retracement levels, but not the standard retail levels (like the 50% or 38.2%).
The Optimal Trade Entry (OTE) is a specific Fibonacci zone where the algorithmic pricing models seek to enter the market during a retracement.
The OTE zone is defined as the area between the 61.8% and 78.6% Fibonacci retracement levels, with the "sweet spot" sitting exactly at the 70.5% level.
If you identify a massive bullish expansion that leaves behind a Fair Value Gap and an Order Block, you draw your Fibonacci tool from the swing low to the swing high. If the Fair Value Gap aligns perfectly with the 70.5% OTE level, you have a high-probability institutional setup.
The ICT Silver Bullet (Time-Based Execution)
The most critical element of ICT that retail traders miss is Time. The algorithmic liquidity sweeps do not happen randomly; they occur during specific macroeconomic windows known as the "Silver Bullet" hours.
- London Silver Bullet: 3:00 AM – 4:00 AM (EST)
- New York AM Silver Bullet: 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM (EST)
- New York PM Silver Bullet: 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM (EST)
During these specific 60-minute windows, the algorithms are actively engineered to hunt retail stops and create FVGs. If you see a massive liquidity sweep at 12:30 PM (EST), it is likely a fakeout. If you see it at exactly 10:15 AM (EST), it is a high-probability institutional setup.
5. Building a Prop Firm Strategy with ICT
The reason ICT is so effective for prop firm challenges is because it inherently provides microscopic invalidation points.
If you are trading a prop firm account, your number one enemy is the 5% daily drawdown limit. If you use retail support and resistance, you are forced to use massive 20-pip or 30-pip stop losses to avoid getting wicked out.
With ICT, your stop loss placement is mathematical:
- If you enter an FVG, your stop loss goes just below the gap.
- If you enter an Order Block, your stop loss goes just 1 tick below the block.
This allows you to utilize extremely tight 3-pip or 5-pip stop losses. Because your stop loss is so tight, you can risk just 0.5% of your account while targeting a massive 1:5 or 1:8 risk-to-reward ratio. You only need a 30% win rate to absolutely crush a prop firm evaluation using ICT mechanics.
6. Final Verdict: Is ICT a Cult or the Truth?
Many critics call ICT a cult because of its complex terminology. But if you strip away the words "Judas Swing" and "Fair Value Gap," the underlying mechanics are undeniable: The market moves to sweep liquidity, and it moves violently enough to leave inefficiencies behind.
If you can train your eyes to stop looking for retail trendlines and start looking for where retail stop losses are clustered, you will stop being the liquidity and start trading alongside the institutions.
Once you have backtested these concepts, you need a prop firm that offers tight spreads and flawless execution so your microscopic stop losses are respected.
